Beautiful West Covina California is a great place to live. Literally, everything you may need is close by. Restaurants, movies, grocery stores, basically any type of service that you and your family require are at hand due to the proximity to Los Angeles. If you are searching for West Covina family dentistry services, then there are a great number of options. You can give it a google and literally have dozens of options to choose from. If you wanted to do your research, it could take you all day to get through all the results.

Here at City Dental Centers, we would like to make it easy for you. City Dental Centers offers all the West Covina family dentistry services that you need. Our dentists and dental professionals are some of the bests in the business and we have the most affordable rates in the area. Here we would like to take a good look at most of the family dental services we offer.

West Covina Family Dentistry Services at City Dental Centers

Children’s Dentistry Services

All of us parents know how much we look forward to taking our children to the dentist. The yelling. The crying. Complaining about how our beloved darlings hate some stranger poking around in their mouths. It’s always a blast. Fun times for all. And it has to be a high point of any parents’ day. However, things don’t have to be pure misery. Far from it, in fact!

Here at City Dental Centers, we know how important our kid’s dental health is. We also know how hard it can be to ensure our kids practice the at-home dental care that they should. While your child is here, they’re family. We make sure that your child’s experience is as fun as possible, and we strive to decrease the anxiety that a kid feels when going to the dentist as much as possible.

We offer all children’s dentistry services such as Pedi-partials, tooth fillings, sedation, braces, space maintainers, night guards, mouth guards for sports, X-rays, root canals, crowns, and emergency trauma care.

Teeth Cleaning and Oral Exam Services

When we finally are able to buy that dream car, you know the one we have been wanting since we had the poster on our wall as a kid, we tend to treat it like our baby. We run it through the car wash every week and change the oil even before the little sticker says it’s time. We want that car to last. For some reason, most of us don’t treat our own teeth with nearly as much attention.

We will just guess and say it’s probably because playing a game on your phone while you run that beautiful vehicle through a car wash is a bit less invasive than having a masked dentist poke, prod, and scrape your teeth with aggressive metal instruments. It’s for this reason that most people will barely make it to the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning, even though it is recommended that cleaning should take place every three months or so.

There are many different issues that will decide the type and nature of your tooth cleaning. Sufferers of periodontal diseases and bone diseases need different types of cleanings. The two types of cleanings offered at City Dental Centers are prophy cleanings and deep cleaning/gum treatments.

Prophy & Plaque Buildup

The term Prophy is use when referring to a standard tooth cleaning. Prophy is used if you have a regular amount of plaque buildup, and your tooth and gum line is in decent condition. The second type of cleaning is a deep cleaning or gum treatment. This is generally used for patients who have been diagnosed with bone loss, bone disease or gingivitis. The dentists normally will numb the patient prior to the cleaning so the process is painless. After the numbing is complete, we begin cleaning all the surfaces of your teeth and rid them of all the germs and deposits. Sometimes it is necessary to administer localized antibiotics and/or irrigation.

After we lose our baby teeth it is vitally important to treat our teeth like that dream car because we will only have one set. If you take care of your teeth, then the three-month cleaning and exam visits are a breeze.

Dental Sealant Services

Every one of us always has natural bacteria that lives in our month and on our teeth, specifically on tooth surfaces that are difficult-to-clean areas like pits and fissures on the teeth, and feeds on the sugars and starches you eat. This bacteria is what leads to the formation of cavities.

Dental sealants are a thin, protective coatings that our dentists adhere to your back teeth that help keep cavities from forming. Dental sealants also help to prevent tooth decay from starting or progressing further that it may have already. When applied, the dental sealant bonds to the natural depressions and grooves in your teeth that provides a shield over the enamel. After application, the dental sealant acts as a shield from the bacteria and acid from eating at the enamel of your teeth. Dental sealants are transparent so that they can be placed over already formed cavities. This also allows the dentist to keep an eye one the sealed cavities to make sure that the cavity doesn’t progress any further after being sealed.

Applying a dental sealant is not an invasive process. The applications are relatively quick and entirely painless. Our dental professionals give your teeth a good cleaning before applying the sealant. Then, after all the teeth have been coated with the sealant, the dentist will then use a special light to harden it.

Emergency Dental Services

One of the unfortunate results from procrastinating on making that dental appointment is when you wake up one morning and feel that dull throbbing coming from your gums. You will probably be like most of us and pretend that it isn’t there and everything is fine, until it isn’t. Tooth pain has to be one of the worst types of pain there is. It’s constant and rarely gets better without treatment. At first, you might be able to just pop a few ibuprofens and carry on about your day, but eventually, not even those will cause the pain to go away.

Even worse is when you suffer a fall or a blow to the face and mouth. Losing or chipping a tooth this way isn’t as comical as the early 90’s cartoons always made it out to be. A great many other things can happen to qualify as a dental emergency, like cracking a dental bridge, losing or breaking a filling, or damaging a retainer or night guard.

Most of us have very different ideas of what an “emergency” consists of. Having a mild toothache that just will not go away right before an important exam at school would be an emergency to a student and getting an object stuck in someone’s teeth right before a first date can also qualify as an emergency. Then there are those stubborn folks who will sooner bleed out than admit that it’s an emergency.

If you aren’t quite sure if your issue is something that needs immediate attention, or if it can wait until a scheduled appointment with our office, don’t be afraid to give us a call and our dental professionals will help you in your time of need.

Fluoride Treatment Services

Fluoride treatments are one of the most common West Covina family dentistry services we offer. They’re a great treatment to start early with your children to help build healthy teeth from the start. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral in many foods and water. For every day of our lives, the enamel of our teeth will gain and lose layers due to demineralization and remineralization. Enamel is lost on our teeth due to acids caused by bacteria, plaque, and sugars in the mouth that eats away at it. We gain enamel (remineralization) from minerals such as calcium, phosphate, and fluoride. When we lose enamel faster than we gain it, we suffer from tooth decay.

Fluoride treatment has been used for many years by dentists to fight tooth decay. The correct usage of Fluoride on teeth adds to the mineralization of your enamel and protects your teeth from the acids and bacteria that would cause tooth decay. Fluoride treatments even can reverse early tooth decay.

Without remineralization of your enamel, cavities can form, and tooth decay can become so progressed that the bacteria can infect the nerves in your teeth and gums. This infection, if left untreated can become a tooth abscess. A tooth abscess is a pocket of pus that is caused by a serious bacterial infection that normally requires emergency dental services.

Dental Night Guard Services

Generally, if you are grinding or gnashing your teeth at night while you sleep you won’t even know it’s happening until you start to experience tooth and jaw pain. Even if you don’t have any pain associated with the grinding, a decent dentist will be able to spot the damage to your teeth right away. This condition is known as Bruxism (teeth grinding), and it happens either during the day (awake bruxism) or while you sleep (sleep bruxism). Sleep bruxism is known as a sleep-related disorder, that is commonly accompanied by other sleep disorders such as sleep apnea or snoring.

Bruxism, like many other sleep disorders, can be mild or severe. If you experience significant side effects from the issue, like tooth pain or sensitivity, headaches, or damage from chewing the sides of your cheek then you may need a dental night guard. Nightguards, also known as mouth guards, or bite splints, are molded plastic plates that fit comfortably in your mouth that put a barrier between your teeth. This barrier will cushion and protect the enamel of your teeth at night as well as protect the jaw and gums.

Avoid Cheap Nightguards!

You can walk into pretty much any pharmacy and buy a cheap night guard with a bunch of fancy guarantees on the package. These guards are generally made from low-grade material with a “one-size-fits-all” selection. Well, unfortunately, everyone’s mouth and teeth are not the same size and shape, and having some bulky, poorly made piece of low-grade plastic in your mouth at night may stop you from sleep gnashing, but mostly because you won’t be able to sleep at all. I generally refer to these as “one-size-fits-none” mouthgards. Even if you do manage to sleep, over-the-counter guards are well known to slip and move in your mouth at night. I can attest to this personally. And it sucks! They cause sores, cuts, and damage to your gums and cheeks.

Our expert dentists at City Dental Centers only use the best material to craft their night guards. Also, your night guard will be custom-made to fit in your mouth perfectly so that you will barely even notice that it is there at night. As always, here at City Dental Centers, we understand that not everyone can afford top-of-the-line dental night guards. If this is the case, then please call us so that we can work with you to get you the night guard you need.

Oral Cancer Screenings

This service may be one of the most important West Covina family dentistry services that we offer. Oral cancer may not be one of the most common forms of cancer, but it is just as serious. Frequently, oral cancer develops on the tongue, around the lining of the mouth and gums as well as the base of the tongue and the back of the throat. Oral cancer generally affects those over the age of 40 and any kind of tobacco use greatly increases the chances of it forming. HPV is also one of the main causes of oral cancer.

If you are experiencing a lump or thick patch in your mouth, lip, or throat that is sore or irritated, then we suggest that you schedule an oral cancer screening with our dentists here at City Dental Centers immediately. Other symptoms of oral cancer include a white or red patch in your mouth, a feeling of something caught in your throat accompanied by soreness, difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking, pain and difficulty moving your jaw and tongue, swelling, and numbness.

It is recommended by the American Cancer Society that you get an oral cancer screening once every 3 years if you are between the ages of 20-40. After the age of 40, plan for yearly screanings. Furthermore, if you smoke or chew tobacco, your chances of oral cancer skyrocket. Therefore, regardless of your age, you need yearly screenings. Like most cancers, early detection greatly improves the chance to stop them from spreading and eliminate them completely.

Oral Hygiene Counseling Services

Most of us know the basics of oral health and maintenance. Frequently, we learned this right about the time we started getting our baby teeth. Brush twice a day and floss is pretty much the whole of it. Maybe don’t eat too much sugar or it will rot your teeth. However, the causes of tooth decay and diseases like gingivitis are a bit more complicated than someone eating too much sugar and not flossing. Sure, not doing those things can cause tooth decay. Nobody’s here to deny that. On the other hand, there are plenty of other things that come into play. Oral tooth and gum health is more complex and nuanced.

Here at City Dental Centers our oral hygiene counseling is an important West Covina family dentistry service. We will sit down and educate you and your family about what actually happens when someone suffers from tooth decay and how to stop it in its tracks. During oral hygiene counseling, We will go over what tooth decay is and how to stop it. We will educate you about preventive measures you can take to ensure that tooth decay doesn’t even start.

Sleep Apnea Services

Sleep Apnea is another sleeping disorder in which sufferers will stop and then start breathing while asleep. This process continues over and over while asleep and can sometimes be deadly. There are 3 main types of sleep apnea. The first type is Obstructive Sleep Apnea, which is the most common form of sleep apnea and is caused when the throat muscles overrelax while asleep. Central Sleep Apnea occurs when your brain doesn’t send the correct signals to the muscles that control breathing while you are asleep. The third main type of sleep apnea is called Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome. This form of sleep apnea, also known as treatment-emergent central sleep apnea, occurs when someone has both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

The most common symptoms of sleep apnea are snoring, daytime tiredness and exhaustion, heart trouble, and high blood pressure. Sometimes sufferers of sleep apnea gasp for air in their sleep. This can happen all night and they wake up in the morning with a bad headache.

If you suffer from mild forms of sleep apnea our dentists here at City Dental Centers will just help guide you on certain lifestyle changes that will relieve the symptoms. Things like quitting smoking, cutting down on alcohol consumption, and getting more exercise during the day will greatly reduce sleep apnea symptoms. Sometimes allergies will play a part in your sleep apnea and some over-the-counter allergy medication is taken before bedtime will help.

You May Need a CPAP Machine

For more severe cases of sleep apnea, or if the above changes of lifestyle don’t improve your sleep apnea symptoms, our dentists may recommend a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device for you to use while sleeping. A CPAP machine includes a mask that fits over your mouth and nose while you sleep. Additionally, a tube connects the mask to a motor that blows clean air into the tube. In order for the treatment to work, you have to use your CPAP at all times when you sleep. This also includes while you travel and during naps. It’s no surprise that it may take some time for you to get used to your CPAP machine. Furthermore, you may have to make additional appointments with our staff for adjustments to your machine.

There are other options for devices to help you sleep better with sleep apnea outside of the CPAP machine. Our dental experts here at City Dental Centers will help you find the one right for you.

Sports Mouth Guard Services

Sports mouth guards are necessary for most contact sports. When you get hit, pushed, jostled or fouled while playing, more often than not the force of the impact will travel up your spine and into your skull and jaw. This impact will then cause your teeth to crack into each other, and if not protected this can cause cracking or breaking of the enamel of your teeth or the tooth itself. Football, Boxing, MMA, motorbiking, skateboarding, and even snowboarding sometimes require mouth guards during practice and competition.

Standard mouth guards are just made of a plastic material and are called the “boil and bite” mouthguard. This means you drop the guard into boiling water, which will make the plastic soft and pliable. Then, you just bite into the hot mouthguard and let the plastic harden. The “boil and bite” mouth guard will then take on the shape of your teeth and offer you decent protection during sports.

The problem with boil and bite sports mouth guards is that they don’t last very long. After a time, they become loose with wear and begin to offer less and less protection. They will then also begin to move around in your mouth during practice and cut up your gums and the insides of your cheeks.

By far the best kind of mouthguard, that offers the most protection to your teeth and gums are custom-made mouthguards by our dental professionals here at City Dental Centers. A custom-made dental mouthguard from City Dental is custom-fit to your teeth made using the highest quality material. Our custom mouthguards are by far the safest and most comfortable and long-lasting option.

TMJ/TMD Treatment Services

TMJ stands for temporomandibular, which are the joints on both sides of your face that connect your lower jawbone to your skull. The TMJ joints assist you in using your jaw to eat and speak. TMD stands for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are disorders of the jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints, and nerves associated with chronic facial pain. Any problem that prevents the complex system of muscles, bones, and joints from working together in harmony may result in temporomandibular disorder.

Common symptoms of TMD include jaw pain, headaches, earaches, neck and shoulder pain, lockjaw, difficulty chewing and speaking, tooth pain, swelling, and ringing in your ear. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, our dentists here at City Dental Centers will help you out. We can diagnose the issue and provide you with the treatment that you need.
