Self-talk is very important. When I began my journey of self-discovery, a book called “The Secret” got me to start thinking about how perspective, particularly interpretation of my reality, can heavily influence the kind of life I could live. I’ve read a lot since then, many books exploring that concept much deeper, but that reality remains true. I’ve learned to think of it through the eyes of another now, and it can really hit where it hurts when someone you love doesn’t feel deserving of your love. It can break your heart when you tell someone that they are beautiful and they don’t see it themselves. Something about them makes them hear when you say, “You’re beautiful” that “No, I’m not”. In the case of my girlfriend, it is her teeth. I hardly notice them, but I know when she looks in the mirror, it is all that she sees.
Her name is Kyrstin (Kiki) Runco. While many individuals suffering similar issues with their teeth deteriorating failed to brush, floss, or diet properly, her only crime was related to heredity. Kiki suffers from weak enamel. This means that her teeth deteriorate much more quickly and are highly sensitive to even occasional snacks or sweets. Kiki’s diet is now vegan, yet her teeth are still deteriorating and she is in pain almost every single day.
Kiki’s problem has resulted in personal pain, discomfort, and confidence issues. She says she never felt like she would ever meet anyone who loved her simply because of her teeth. I’m happy to say we’re both very happy together and she knows her teeth are not a problem to me, but I know they are a problem to her. She told me once, with tears in her eyes, that her condition makes her feel the worst when she interacts with children and they tell her she has something in her teeth or ask her if something is wrong with them. It’s broken my heart to see how this problem affects her.
With the help of City Dental Centers founders Dr. Sam Shahoveisi and Dr. Michael Danial, otherwise known as Dr. Sam and Dr. Mike, we plan to resolve Kiki’s problems forever. I have seen the remarkable work they have done for their patients, whom they treat like family, and trust them with her care. I know their professional care will treat her condition and their dental materials made in their patient-exclusive dental lab will last. I want them to help her feel just as beautiful as I know she already is.
