What Are Dental Emergencies?
In spite of our best efforts, sometimes dental emergencies happen. And when they do, it can cause a great amount of pain, anxiety, and fear. However, the term “emergency” means different things to different people, and they’re not always sure if they should wait to see the dentist during normal business hours, or if they should call to seek treatment immediately, regardless of the time of day.
In reality, virtually any dental pain can be defined as a dental emergency. A broken tooth, infected gums, even extreme sensitivity to various temperatures may qualify as a dental emergency. However, there is usually a distinction between urgent procedures and ones that can wait to be addressed during standard business hours.
Examples of Urgent Dental Emergencies
- Intensely painful swelling
- Bleeding that won’t stop
- Unbearably painful toothaches
- A permanent tooth that’s become loosened
- Knocked-out teeth
- Injuries to the jaw
Examples of Priority Dental Emergencies
- Cracking a dental bridge
- Breaking or losing a dental crown or filling
- Breaking or losing your retainer or night guard
- Mild toothaches
- Objects stuck between teeth
What if I’m Not Sure?
If you’re unsure if you’re experiencing a dental emergency, please feel free to give us a call to get a professional opinion. The dentists at City Dental Centers specialize in emergency dental treatments and oral surgery. We’ll be able to tell you whether you need to come in immediately or if you’re fine to schedule a standard appointment.
When you come in for your visit, expect your dentist or orthodontist to ask you a variety of related questions about your health, to perform a dental exam, take a digital X-ray scan of your mouth and teeth, take photos of your face and teeth, and anything else that will help them address your dental emergencies and how to best begin treatment.
