Information About Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation uses a pill to induce sedative effects before a cleaning or procedure. Frequently, the patient receives and consumes this medication before their dentist appointment. As the pill is digested and absorbed into the body, powerful anti-anxiety medication will begin entering your bloodstream.
Unlike using Nitrous Oxide sedation, there’s no need to wear a mask or any other special equipment during your procedure, which some patients may prefer. Additionally, oral conscious sedation produces much deeper sedative effects. Furthermore, the patient may feel groggy or tired. They may even fall asleep during the procedure. However, unlike stronger forms of sedation dentistry, you will not slip into an unconscious state, can be roused, and should be able to respond to commands.
These benefits make oral conscious sedation a better option for patients with more serious anxiety, or for more invasive dental surgeries like tooth extractions and dental implants.
Common Drugs Used For Oral Conscious Sedation
Valium, a trade name for the generic drug Diazepam, Midazolam (trade name Versed) Midazolam works well when short treatment procedures are performed. Other forms of oral conscious sedation medications are Halcion (Triazolam), Zaleplon (Sonata), and Lorazepam (Ativan).
Side effects of consuming oral sedation medications usually last about 4-6 hours. However, some of its effects can persist for up to 24 hours. As a result, any patient receiving oral conscious sedation needs to plan for someone to drive you to and from our office. Additionally, we do not recommend you attempt to return to work or school after your appointment.
