Here at City Dental Centers our professional and gentle dentists will recommend the most appropriate type of cleaning for you. This decision is based on the amount of plaque and tartar build up, gum health, and whether or not you suffer from a periodontal diseases like bone loss or bone disease.
Here are the 2 types of teeth cleaning we offer:
- Prophy: This is the term we use for a regular cleaning. You will receive a prophy that cleans plaque on your teeth and gum line if your gums and teeth are in relatively healthy condition.
- Deep Cleaning or Gum Treatment: If you have already been diagnosed with bone loss or bone disease, tartar deposits below the gum, or severe gingivitis, a deep cleaning is necessary to improve your oral health and get you back on track. A deep cleaning is painless for the patient, because numbing is required. Once the patient is numb, we begin cleaning all surfaces of the teeth and ridding them of germs and deposits. If necessary localized antibiotics and/or irrigation will be advised. This type of treatment usually takes 2 full visits. After the procedure is complete, you will be placed on a regular check up regimen and schedule.
Regular cleanings are proven to prevent gum disease. Gum disease is a bacterial infection caused by a bacteria-filled film on your teeth, as known as plaque. When plaque builds up, it becomes tartar by hardening and being more difficult to remove. Plaque bacteria emit toxins that will irritate your gums, which causes swelling and gingivitis. If you allow the inflammation caused by plaque to continue, gum disease will only worsen and you will experience severe side effects like tooth loss or extraction.
